Will Using Lose It! Help Me? It Has Helped John

Pardon my referring to myself in the third person in the headline, I’m trying to attract search engine traffic with the question at the start of the title but also wanted you to know how Lose It! is helping me. Both Tony and I have written here before about how much we like Lose It!

I don’t normally post the various accomplishment badges that Lose It!, a calorie-tracking app, sends but thought I would the latest because it notes that I’ve entered food I’ve eaten into my Lose It! app every day for the past 52 weeks. That’s a lot of entering, why do I do it?

I find keeping the Lose It! e-food diary has helped me rein in some of my bad eating habits. I, like most people, constantly under-estimate the calorie count of most foods I eat at restaurants and fast-food outlets. Lose It! has helped tremendously with that.

My only complaint is that it’s almost impossible to track meals I have at upscale restaurants with creative menus in Lose It! When I took my wife out for her birthday, for example, I ordered carpaccio (raw beef), a squid dish and bow-tie pasta with duck and in a duck-based sauce. I did my best to estimate calories for all that but know I was likely way off.

Lose It! also doesn’t have complete menus for every major fast food chain. I can’t find a calorie count for a large chocolate chip cookie at McDonald’s, for example, only for the boxed smaller cookies.

That said, I still find it a very helpful app. My wife and I had lunch at a Cosi’s recently, a chain that isn’t as widely known as a McDonald’s but Lose It! has Cosi items listed, including the salmon salad I ordered for lunch.
