How Much Junk Food am I Eating in 2012?

The answer to the question in the headline is significantly less junk food, thankfully.

As 2011 drew to a close, I blogged about how I’d fallen off the junk food wagon last year, going way overboard in eating such sugary, empty calorie items as Hostess HoHos, M&Ms, chocolate chip cookies and Musketeer bars, among others.

The result was a 17-pound weight gain in 2011, sending me to an unhealthy 221 at year’s end (I’m six feet tall). Since January of this year, however, I have been watching my intake of junk more closely and simply cutting out a lot of it. At the same time, I’m continuing my exercise regimen of about 50 minutes a day.

So, as the first quarter of 2012 ended, I’d lost six pounds this year. And, looking back at my eating habits courtesy of Lose It!, I’ve made progress in the junk food area.

My M&M calorie intake for the first three months of this year was 2,610 over eight occasions for an average of 326 calories a sitting. Last year, I consumed M&Ms 57 times for 16,788 calories. If I keep to my current pace, I’ll consume 10,440 calories of M&Ms this year, a drop of 6,348 calories.

Musketeer bars were another weakness of mine in 2011 when I consumed 15,622 calories of those. In the first quarter of this year, I consumed only 1,140 calories of Musketeer bars; if I keep on that pace for the year, my total Muskie calories will be 4,560 calories, a drop of 11,062 calories compared with 2011.

Hershey Kisses were another area of weakness for me in 2011. I mistakenly thought I would eat less because they are small but instead I ate 20 or more at a sitting, meaning a minimum of 400 calories. My Kisses calorie count for 2011 was 16,880 calories. In the first quarter of this year, I ate 1,080 calories of Kisses, which would be 4,320 on an annualized basis, or 12,560 calories below my 2011 pace.

So, just staying on my current pace for these three would mean I consume 29,970 fewer empty calories this year, about 8.6 pounds. I hope to cut down even further than my current pace for each of these.
