How Many Calories in McDonald’s Barbeque Sauce?

I’ve written about a variety of McDonald’s offerings here because I think it’s difficult for anyone in a work-a-day environment who is looking for a place to have lunch to not be near a McDonald’s and I want to equip you with as much calorie and nutrition information as possible.

My barbeque sauce packet, read the ingredients.

But it struck me the other day that I’ve overlooked one of the most ubiquitous of McDonald’s products, its barbeque sauce. If you order Chicken McNuggets or the new Chicken McBites as I did last week, you will get a sauce. I asked for barbeque sauce last week and then was about to open the packet when I glanced at the ingredient list.

High fructose corn syrup is listed first which means it’s the main ingredient. Having a sugar as the main ingredient got me wondering about calorie count, so I searched the McDonald’s site without luck. I did find it on Livestrong.com, however.

A 28 gram package has 50 calories and 10 grams of sugar. That means more than a third of that package is sugar. Keep that in mind the next time you ask for three or four, thinking, “oh it’s only sauce, how bad can it be?” In case you weren’t aware of it one teaspoon of sugar weighs 4.2 grams, so this small packet has more than two teaspoons full of sugar in it.
