Metabolism and weight loss – WebMD

As my blog title says, I am one regular guy writing about diet, exercise, etc. Professionally, I worked 20 years as a financial journalist. After writing this blog for nearly seven years, I consider myself to be a newbie health journalist, but still just a regular guy. I still find myself in deep waters when it comes to body chemistry among other medical subjects.

So when I ran across the extensive write up on metabolism by WebMD, I thought I would share some of it. You can read the whole thing by clicking the link.

Metabolism is the body’s engine. It’s the energy you burn just to keep your heart beating, your lungs breathing, and your other organs running. Unless you’re an elite athlete, resting metabolism accounts for 60% to 75% of all the calories you burn each day, and it varies a lot from person to person.

If you’re counting calories, knowing your resting metabolism can help you figure out how much you can eat without gaining weight.

People who have a naturally high metabolic rate can eat more, without gaining weight, than people who burn calories at a slower pace.

The bad news: It’s hard to boost your resting metabolism much beyond its natural set point, though it is possible to slow it down.

Are you familiar with the TV show The Biggest Loser? I know it has been around a while and has a certain popularity. I watched it a few times, but was never comfortable with it. It seemed so unnatural and I had a feeling it wasn’t truly healthy either. Continue reading

7 Ways to Speed Up Your Metabolism

A study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found that drinking water—about 17 ounces—increases metabolic rate by 30 percent in healthy men and women. The body needs water in order to process calories, so even if you’re mildly dehydrated, your metabolism may wind down. Even on non-training days, you should aim to drink a minimum of 2 or 3 liters of water a day; on days you do workout, amp up that amount depending on the intensity of your activity.

You hit the gym five days a week. You eat all the veggies you can get your hands on. You religiously avoid all white carbs. Why Skipping Meals Will Not Help You Lose Weight

To achieve a healthy weight through weight control or weight loss you need to eat regularly throughout the day.

Medical journalist Michael Mosley demonstrated the effect of skipping breakfast in his show 10 Things You Need to Know to Lose Weight on PBS. He had two MRI brain scans across two days. On the first day he had a full breakfast, on the second, he had no breakfast at all. When he wasn’t hungry, Michael’s brain did not respond much to pictures of either low calorie food like veggies or salads or high calorie foods like sugar caes and fatty chips. However, on the morning he skipped breakfast, his brain buzzed with activity when shown high calorie sugary donuts. Yet he showed far less response to a salad. images

So skipping breakfast caused his brain to try to compensate by desiring high calorie foods – clearly a dieting disaster.

When our stomachs empty out, we get a signal to our brain that says, “Feed me!” There is a powerful urge to eat high calorie foods to compensate.

Clearly, this puts unyielding pressure on one’s will power to avoid high calorie foods since your brain is screaming for exactly that. Continue reading
