Jessica Alba’s Honest Company Sunscreen Harming Customers

Jessica Alba’s Honest Company which prides itself on selling healthy organic products seems to have really dropped the ball with its Sunscreen product.

Time reported, “Users of Jessica Alba’s Honest Company Sunscreen Are Posting Photos of Epic Sunburns”

“In a statement to the Today Show, the Honest Company stressed that the sunscreen is tested by an independent third party with positive results and that “the number of complaints received on our own website about our Sunscreen Lotion constitute less than one half of one percent of all units actually sold at Honest.com. We stand behind the safety and efficacy of this product.”

This statement seems strange to me in view of the fact that users commenting on Amazon go back all the way to April and the company continues to stand by their product.

Out of 189 customer reviews on Amazon, more than 140 were negative.

Here are a couple of the Amazon comments:

WARNING! Do Not Use! Increases Sunburns!
By Adam Watson on May 13, 2015
Sunburn Accelerant! I feel like filing a lawsuit against Honest. You don’t mess around with something this important. We applied this before going to the beach and reapplied at the beach after swimming. We all got burned, especially my daughter. I feel like a bad parent. I had a bottle of Neutrogena sunscreen spray but forgot to take it. The Honest sunscreen seemed to make my daughter burn even more than if she had no sunscreen at all. Continue reading

Athletes and Film Stars to Push Veggies

Colin Kaepernick, Cam Newton and Jessica Alba, among others,  have signed on to help promote fruit and vegetable consumption in a new program.

The push is being called FNV – which stands for Fruits and Vegetables.

The campaign will start on social media like Twitter where short videos will be posted. The first will be posted online today.

Jessica Alba star of one of my favorite shows, Dark Angel, is on the FNV team.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) loves it. “What a breath of fresh air to see entertainers and athletes getting behind this innovative campaign to promote fruit and vegetable consumption. It would be nice to see more celebrities following the example of Jessica Alba, Colin Kaepernick, and Stephen Curry and the others involved with this project. For too long, entertainers and athletes have used their clout to promote soda and other junk foods, so perhaps the FNV campaign heralds a new trend.

“For this campaign to succeed, it will need a huge and sustained investment behind it, which I hope the industry provides. Ideally government agencies would invest in similar media campaigns aimed at reducing junk food consumption and promoting healthy diets,” according to a statement by CSPI Executive Director Michael Jacobson.

I would just like to add my own two cents here that I love this accentuating the positive as opposed to governments and municipalities coming in and banning junk foods. It pays to think positive.

I Bought Shampoo From the Dark Angel at Costco

I have been a James Cameron fan ever since his epic creation The Terminator appeared in 1984. Cameron directed as well as co-wrote it. I enjoyed the subsequent offerings in the franchise and when Cameron co-created the Dark Angel TV series in 2000 I was there from the beginning. It broke my heart when they didn’t renew after only two years. Gorgeous 19 year old Jessica Alba played the title role of Max who was a bike messenger. As a daily bike rider, this hit me where I live.

Cut to the present. I read in the Costco magazine recently that foxy Jessica Alba, now a 31-year old mom, has started The Honest Company that makes healthy household products. Max has managed to move the bar code from the back of her neck to the back of her shampoo bottle.

Lo and behold, going through Costco this morning, I ran across a combination shampoo and body wash from … The Honest Company.

The shampoo is made from jojoba and quinoa proteins, organic coconut oil and moisturizers, “perfectly ph balanced to remove dirt without stripping natural oils.”

Clearly using quinoa and coconut oil makes it very attractive to a guy who has blogged about both.

I had to buy it and try it. Having done so, I can attest to its very clean ‘sweet orange vanilla’ scent. It produced only a fair lather which was disappointing, but I felt clean after using it. I will take their word that none of my natural oils were stripped away in the shower.

Personally, as a fan of the benefits of a market economy, I don’t appreciate her calling her firm The Honest Company as if all her competition is not honest. I suppose that is typical Left Coast Hollywood thinking about big business. I believe that the firms that sell Old Spice and Irish Spring, and have been around significantly longer than Jessica’s company, are equally honest and produce worthwhile products. I know, I use them, too.

So, even if you weren’t a Dark Angel fan, you might like to try her shampoo-body wash or other products.
