The bacteria that live in our gut have a critical role in helping or hurting our health. A new study found intake of some foods was consistently associated with the presence of “bad” bacteria, and others with “good” bacteria, according to the Tufts Health & Nutrition Letter.

The researchers examined bacteria in the stool of over 1,400 individuals in the Netherlands and compared this with self-reported food intake. A little less than half the participants had a diagnosed digestive disorder (inflammatory bowel disease or irritable bowel syndrome), and the rest were representative of the general population. Overall, processed foods, animal products, sugar, and fast food were consistently associated with the presence of more “bad” bacteria—those likely to produce endotoxins that damage the gut’s mucus layer—whereas higher intake of minimally processed plant foods and fish was associated with bacteria species involved in healthier nutrient metabolism and the production of beneficial compounds. This study supports a growing body of evidence that feeding ourselves—and our gut bacteria—well is an important pathway for good health.

Tony, a question not connected with this post. That is how old you are and how is it affecting your memory? I’m 77, fit and healthy, but struggling to remember certain things. If you prefer to reply ‘privately’ that is OK by me.

No problem, Paul. I turned 82 in January. My memory is fine, I think. I forget stuff sometimes, but can usually find it in my head. Check out my post on ‘senior moments’: https://guysandgoodhealth.com/2022/05/07/what-about-senior-moments/?fbclid=IwAR3wE-rEbK2-o2kTl_YizV_WJ4sljbWwfaXQgb8utbh3hn6rV1tdpUUWYjA.
Hope that is helpful.

Yes it was. With me it is more a case of forgetting what I have done in the past. As in forgetting that we have visited a place or especially the location here in nearby Grants Pass of such people as our local doctor. The challenge is that I take my driving very seriously and have little spare attention to view the places we are going past. It is alright with places we visit frequently such as the petrol station or the food store but the doctor’s place is something else!

The other thing, or should I say the only thing, that I frequently suffer from is lack of a good night’s sleep. Jeannie has Parkinson’s and that frequently affects her sleep. For example, last night Jean slept until midnight (we tend to go to bed around 21:00) and at 03:45 had to get up and switched the light on.

I have erratic sleep also. I stop drinking water at 8:00 p.m. Usually, in bed at 9:30 p.m. Sometimes I go four or five hours before a bathroom break, but sometimes two. No rhyme or reason for the divergence.
