As they used to say on Monty Python, “And now for something new and completely different.” Really. In the nearly 4000 posts I have written for the blog I don’t remember ever giving a shopping tip before. I think this one is fascinating.
As regular readers know, I am an old man and because of that I often shop online. Amazon
is has been one of my favorite shopping sites.
Here is the story. I love the macaroni and bean dish pictured above. On the west side of Chicago growing up we called it pasta fazool. Because of the ease of ordering, instead of walking or driving to the super market to buy some, I simply dialed up the Amazon site on my desktop and ordered six cans.
That’s when the fun started.
Here is the link for its listing on Amazon. As you can see, the price for six cans is $22.64. Fair enough just under $4.00 for a can of delicious soup. Sold!
Two days later, I went down to the receiving room in my building to get my order. But wait! It was not in the familiar Amazon box. INSTEAD, the box had been shipped from Walmart.com. I hadn’t ordered anything from Walmart and yet, here was a delivery for me. Sure enough, when I got it upstairs, there was my six cans of pasta fazool.
Inquiring minds want to know, right? So, I hopped on my computer and called up Walmart.com. Searched Progresso soup. You can check the link here. What about the price, you may be wondering. It was $11.88. That’s right, barely more than HALF the price on Amazon.
Well, you can guess where I will be buying my pasta fazool from in the future.
For the record, I complained to Amazon, but got no response. I also wrote a review of my experience which has not seen the light of day.
If you shop much at Amazon, you might consider checking out Walmart.com. It’s not as trendy, but you might be able to buy the same product for a lot less.
As is probably obvious, I was amazed at this experience. If you have had anything similar happen with Amazon or any other online vendor, please feel free to share.
