Regular readers know that I have been doing home study from The Great Courses since I retired over 12 years ago. So far, I have studied, nutrition, neuroscience, the brain and increasing longevity to name a few. Also, I have shared what I learned on the blog. So, I am pleased to announce that I have just commenced with The Science of Natural Healing.
At this point I have listened to several of the lectures and am very impressed with Dr. Guarneri’s expertise. She came from regular medicine where she was surgically implanting over 700 stents a year in patient’s arteries. Through natural healing Dr. Guarneri has found what she considers to be a better way to prevent heart disease as well as myriad other diseases.
In lecture six, she talks about inflammation, nature’s way of protecting our bodies and how it is the root of many of our health problems. Inflammation is our body’s normal response to injury, infection, stress, foreign substances and irritations. Inflammation in our body presents itself in swelling, warmth, redness, pain. That is the body’s defense mechanism going to work so that healing can take place. However, in a situation where our body is under chronic attack, inflammation becomes damaging.
What you eat can turn inflammation on and what you eat can turn it off. Sugar is the number one cause of inflammation. Oils can also be problematic. She says to avoid at all costs grapeseed oil, cottonseed oil, corn oil, safflower oil and sunflower oil as they are high in omega 6. They are often found in fast foods and processed foods.
Milk is another major cause of inflammation. Some 60 percent of the world’s population can not digest milk. Because of this milk is a common cause of arthritis and skin rashes.
Cured meats and red meats are another source of inflammatory medical problems. They are linked to colon cancer, ovarian cancer and heart disease.
She makes an interesting point talking about eating meat. Animals on feedlots are routinely fed a diet high in antibiotics, hormones, soybeans and corn. Eating meat from an animal fed a diet high in omega 6 leads to inflammation. So, we not only have to pay attention to what we eat, but also what the animals ate the produce our meats.
Alcohol is another source of inflammation. It is all right for women to drink a glass of wine or liquor about four nights a week and men as much as one glass a night. But, excess alcohol consumption is rampant in our culture. Dr. Guarneri links excess alcohol consumption to esophageal cancer, laryngeal cancer, cirrhosis of the liver and hepatitis. Alcohol is a sugar so if you are trying to keep your sugar consumption down, you need to keep your alcohol consumption down.
Artificial food additives are another culprit. Monosodium glutamate and aspartame trigger the inflammatory response. You need to read the ingredients in your food packages before you buy them.
As an arthritis sufferer, I am acutely aware of how painful this disease can be. Dr. Guarneri says that by controlling the food we eat we can reduce the inflammation in our bodies and ameliorate the pain of various diseases, specifically arthritis.
As of two days ago when I first heard the inflammation lecture, I have gone into ‘lockdown’ on my food consumption avoiding all the above-mentioned pitfalls.
That takes care of the negative side of dealing with inflammation. I will deal with the positive side in my next post.
