This year looks to be a renaissance year for that perennial breakfast favorite oatmeal, and I think McDonald’s deserves a lot of credit for that.
A Food Channel survey revealed that oatmeal is our number one breakfast choice this year.
In the battle with obesity that our country is fighting and appears to be losing on a daily basis this has to be good news. After all, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Getting fueled up well with a healthy breakfast sets up our body and mind for the day’s challenges. It also may contribute to reduced unhealthy snacking late in the morning as our energy winds down ahead of lunchtime.
McDonald’s put oatmeal on their menu last December. We blogged about it in January. That item proved to be one of our most popular stories behind our write-ups on McDonald’s Angus burger.
Other fast food chains are also in the oatmeal hunt. Starbucks has been offering it since 2008. Caribou Coffee introduced it in the beginning of last year. Jamba Juice rolled it out in September of last year.
While Starbucks qualifies as a major leaguer on the fast food front. Caribou and Jamba Juice also got their products out earlier. However, there seems no question that McDonald’s put oatmeal into the mainstream consciousness. Lastly, McD’s offers the oatmeal all day, so you don’t have to get there by a certain time or miss out on it.
Wouldn’t it be something if they could come up with a nutritious low calorie substitute for the burger?
