Portion Distortion Over the Years (Original April 8)

Portion size is one of our key concepts in weight management and the battle with obesity. In view of that we call your attention to the Portion Distortion slide show we wrote about last April.

Please check out the brilliant slide show available from the link on the Remember This page number 10. It demonstrates how serving portions have ballooned in the past 20 years. The first slide shows the humble bagel. Some 20 years ago it had a 3 inch diameter and amounted to 140 calories. Now it has a 6 inch diameter and accounts for 350 calories. The second example asks how long it will take a 130 lb person to burn that extra 210 calories by raking leaves. The third slide answers that it will take 50 minutes to burn those calories raking leaves.

This is just one example from a truly enlightening slide show which includes hamburgers and pizza as well as pasta andsoft drinks.

It is sponsored by The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, National Institutes of Health and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute PDI – Portion Distortion 1.
