Quinoa and Brown Rice – Seeds of Change

That wonderful phrase “Seeds of Change” is actually a pun. I was pleasantly surprised to pick up the package of Seeds of Change this morning at Costco. How lovely, a combination of quinoa and brown rice. Talk about good calories! The other meaning of seeds of change is, of course, the items John and I post here with a view to helping you and ourselves to reach a healthy weight and maintain it.

On sale at Costco this week.

Back to the package. Because it was at Costco, my purchase consisted of four packages. I had never heard of this product, but I am a quinoa fan as well as a big consumer of brown rice. Last, but not least, I am Mr. Lazy Cook, and this is a microwaveable product that is ready in two minutes. For me it doesn’t get much better than that.

I had some for lunch. Interesting taste, there is a slight garlic under flavor. Because of the wonderful food value, I am going to let it grow on me. I am sure that after cooking it can also be cooled and used to spark up a salad, too. I often use cold quinoa that way.

The package states that their quinoa is cultivated in the Uyuni Salt Flats in the Bolivian Atiplano. “This supergrain is exceptionally nutritious as well as fluffy and delicious. In fact it’s said to have been used in sacred rituals by the ancient Incas.”

The package in the photo contains 8.5 ounces which comprise two servings. A serving has 240 calories, 3.5 grams of total fat, 0.5 grams of saturated fat, no cholesterol, 400 grams of sodium, 47 grams of carbohydrate 3 grams of fiber and 6 grams of protein.

I recommend this as a high food value addition to your diet.

Tony

Consider it a science experiment and trying making quinoa from scratch. I’ve been playing with it and have concocted quinoa apricot cheesecake bars and today I made quinoa pasta from scratch.

Hi there. I finally just “cooked” the first of the pack which I bought it a few months ago at Costco. It’s surprisingly good and will become a staple in my effort to get back in shape and trim off 30 to 40 lbs of fat. I generally hate convenience products but this tastes really good (I just tossed it with roasted brussels sprouts) and has minimal downside (other than the packaging).

Oh, wait. I take back that glowing review. I should have done a little internet perusing before I posted. I’m not feeling as lovey-dovey about the brand now that I’ve learned a bit more. I knew convenience came with a price but at the price I paid per pack, I thought I’d already met the cost.

How would you cook it on the stove top in a pot?
